*Newbie-Lurker* Posts: 7 Apr 20 09 8:45 PM	Tags : 1100, tps, replacement Remove this ad My TPS went out today on my 05 1100 Silverado. Went to start and clunking and clanging was all I got. Before I could even respond the starter clutch quit, leaving only the starter working. With a lot of time searching and working the service manual, I found the TPS with infinite resistance all legs. Before I jump in and replace it, I would like to know what I am getting into. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My only fear is that there is damage to the starter clutch and starter. Before I try to start it after repairs I am going to pull the starter for an inspection. Thanks, Mr. Bill

Posts: 523 Apr 20 09 10:11 PM Moderator, YSC Staff	Hi Bill, I'm sure you know the "throttle poaition sensor" (TPS) is a Variable resistor. (POT). Not sure sure how much experience you have with an Ohm meter so let me ask a dumb question. Were you checking it still in the circuit, and could have there have been any voltage on it? If so it would fool your Ohm meter. I am thinking a bad TPS would have little to do with clunking and clanging. Sounds more like a low battery. Or perhaps you are saying the engine is kicking back against the starter? I think you have a manual so don't need this but just in case. Let us know how you do and a little more of what is happening. Dave CHECKING AND ADJUSTING THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR Before adjusting the throttle position sensor, the engine idling speed should be properly adjusted. 1. Inspect: throttle position sensor a. Disconnect the throttle position sensor coupler. b. Connect the pocket tester (W 1k) to the throttle position sensor. Tester positive lead blue 1 Tester negative lead black 2 c. Check the throttle position sensor resistance "R1". Out of specification Replace the throttle position sensor. Throttle position sensor resistance "R1" 4 6 kW at 20C (68F) (blue - black) d. Connect the pocket tester (W 1k) to the throttle position sensor. Tester positive lead yellow 3 Tester negative lead black 2 e. While slowly opening the throttle, check that the throttle position sensor resistance "R2" is within the specified range. Out of specification Replace the throttle position sensor. Throttle position sensor resistance "R2" 0.56 0.84 kW to 3.01 4.51 kW at 20C (68F) (yellow - black) 2. Adjust: throttle position sensor angle a. Loosen the throttle position sensor screws 1 . b. Turn the throttle position sensor in direction a or b until the specified closed-throttle resistance is indicated on the pocket

*Newbie-Lurker* Posts: 7 Apr 21 09 5:53 AM	Dave, I know this sounds impossible, but all leads are wide open! I was led to this point because the ignitor module fires the one way clutch which had no voltage to it. In fact there was no output from the ignitor module. There was input. The factory service manual maybe hard to read, but if you read it enough you can get to the heart of the problem. The TPS was fine during a routine check two months ago. I have ordered a Dynatek ignitor module so that I know that I have a good one. I will be at the stealer today to order the TPS. I am seriously thinking about taking the TPS to work and performing and autopsy (I fix medical equipment - we love to tear into defective parts and see what's inside!). I am very nervous about pulling the starter and seeing whats inside. The thought of damage is not easing the pain. I will update as they become available. Mr. Bill

Posts: 523 Apr 22 09 4:14 PM Moderator, YSC Staff	Bill, My Vstar was an 05, I see my manual on a CD I bought on ebay is for years 99 and 2000. I don't see the ignighter unit powering a clutch. I do see it supplying the negative connection for one half the starting circuit cut off relay, which cuts off the fuel pump. It has inputs of the throttle position sensor, speed sensor, run stop sw, and power from main switch, Alarm if one is present. Outputs to the ignition coils and starting cut off circuit. Hope I'm not off on a wrong trail. Let us know how things are going. There are some hands on folks here. Dave
